Office Chair for Sale

Am I really so horrible?

So my grandmother buys all of this furniture (several years ago, when I was 17) for my first apartment. Three years later I finally get a place of my own. The furniture is very old stuff she got from a garage sale: a dining room table with chairs that are 30 years out of fashion (padded cushion chairs with wheels on them!). They are falling apart. There are also a few side tables where the paint is worn/look extremely dated from the 80s/ugly. There is also a dresser that is newer that my grandmother painted herself, but alas it still doesnt go with my things….

Since I did not want to hurt her feelings I told her that I put everything in the apartment and it looks great. She dug deeper and deeper (I was storing them at the office, and my uncle who works here told her that I still had the furniture in the warehouse) and now she is calling me a liar and implying that I’ve basically committed a sin.

Is it really _THAT_ bad?

No, I think what you did was to try to be kind and spare her feelings. Sometimes being honest hurts and isn’t always necessary. Just explain that to your grandma….tell her that you would do it again if you thought the truth would hurt her because you love her so much.

Trust me, she’ll get over this and realize in time why you did it. Remember she is supposed to be wiser than you, right? With age comes wisdom and I think she is wrong to call you a liar and a sinner. She certainly knows better. You both are human. Good luck!

Office Chair No Wheels

How to stop chairs from rolling in classroom?

I would like to pick your brains about some chairs I have in my classroom at the high school where I work. The chairs are rolling office chairs and the floor is linoleum.

The wheels can be removed, but, without the wheels, the chair is not usable to sit on because the pole in the center of the chair base comes down farther than where the wheels are attached.

There is no money in the budget for new chairs (there are 33 of them), rugs or cushions under the chairs, or to carpet the room.

The wheels are made of plastic. There is a small metal axle between the two sides of a wheel leaving space between them. The top half (but not the sides) of the wheel unit is covered by a plastic outer shell.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you!

You look like a hot teacher :)

Could you not put screws through the gaps in the wheels to stop them rolling?

Or.. wrap rubber bands or string around the axle to stop the wheel from spinning so fast?

Or.. get a blowtorch ( $5 from any hardware store ) and melt the plastic onto the axle to prevent any further movement.
