Leather Office Chair Clearance

by richard on Nov.29, 2008, under Office Chairs

When deciding on a furniture store to do business with, there are several important factors to consider and many options to decide on. First, you’ll want to think of the type of furniture you’re interested in purchasing, although a great number of stores and furniture dealers have pieces in a wide variety of styles that are designed to blend in with any type of décor.

Fortunately, several stores offer layaway or interest free plans to qualified customers on purchases over a certain amount. Many stores also have sales near most holidays, with some having end of the season clearance events as well as rebates and a variety of discounts.

Also when choosing a place to buy furniture, inquire ahead of time about their shipping and delivery policies, and find out if there are any extra fees involved for assembling or setting up the furniture after delivery. Some stores will also haul away old furniture as well, but may charge extra for the service. It’s also smart to choose a furniture store with the reputation of good customer service and return policies.

A good furniture store will have everything necessary to completely furnish a room, not only couches, chairs, and tables, but also lighting, rugs, with some even having window treatments, bedding, mattresses, pictures, wall hangings, and a host of other decorative accessories.

For the bedroom, the best stores should have a choice of beds in every size and style, from four poster beds complete with head and footboards, as well as futons and daybeds, bunk beds, and a variety of children’s beds and furniture. The best type of youth furniture collections are those that are durable and adjustable so that they “grow” along with the child.

If you have the luxury of consulting with an interior designer, ask them about their experiences with different companies, or which store they might recommend. The internet is an excellent place to read reviews from customers who’ve already shopped at a certain store, or who offer their tips and hints about sales and deals at certain retailers.

You can also use the internet to find all of the stores in your area and read about what services they may offer as well as their locations and hours of operation. Most furniture manufacturers today have their own web site to showcase their selections and offer information about the company. By choosing a furniture store with a web site, you’ll have the option of browsing through their collections before heading out to the stores.

Some web sites selling furniture also feature interactive tools where you can enter the dimensions of a room, and move pieces of virtual furniture around to see how the placement should be before your new furniture is even delivered to your home.

Most stores will also have catalogs featuring all of the furniture they offer, with some even having the option of special orders, in which the customer can indicate their preferences or specifics about the furniture they would like to purchase. Of course this option more than likely will come at a higher price than furniture that is mass produced.

The best online furniture store is called Home Decorators Collection. For a detailed review of this great store visit www.furnitureandfurnishingsonline.com

Hiliter Preprinted

by richard on Nov.14, 2008, under The Office

It doesn’t seem like much right now, while you are in the comfort of your own office.  When you’re on the road, running out of staples, needing extra Velcro to attach your graphics to your booth, needing a little duct tape to fix, well, just about anything…it becomes a crisis and an expensive one at that.  It’s a simple case of supply and demand.  You demand a roll of tape, it’s 10 minutes before the show starts, the only supplier is show services…they can charge whatever they want.

Tip:  An hour before the show starts and you realize you are missing a graphic or need a product spec sheet printed is not the time to go hunting for the nearest Kinkos.  You are wasting valuable time.  Before you leave for the show, look up the closest walk-in service printing outlets to the convention center (don’t worry, these people are on to us, they will be very close) and stick information such as phone numbers, addresses, direction, hours of operations in your gang box.

Every seasoned exhibitor has a gang box that goes with them to every show.  It is one of the most important pieces to their exhibit so it is checked and restocked after every show and double checked before it is sent with the booth.  We’ve split the list into two, one for the basics everyone should have regardless of what kind of display you use.  We’ve also included an optional list to cover the needs of bigger booths which involve more labor, parts and pieces.

Must Haves

Even if you are thinking I won’t need that, trust me…if you don’t pack it you will probably need it.  You will also find yourself channeling MacGyver at a show and will come up with amazing alternative uses for some of these items.  Also, keep adding to this list when things come up again over and over again.

  • Roll of Velcro (this is our number one favorite/most useful item…you can hem a skirt or pants if need be)
  • A pair of scissors
  • Solar calculator
  • Super-glue
  • Glue stick
  • Scotch tape and double sided tape
  • Packing tape/gaffers tape (doesn’t leave as much sticky residue as Duct Tape)
  • Mini stapler, staples, staple remover
  • 5 black Sharpies (no end to the uses, graphics touchups, shoe scuff touchup, writing things down)
  • Box of pens
  • Pack of assorted color felt tip markers (for graphics touchup)
  • Mechanical pencil with eraser and extra lead
  • Highlighter pen
  • An assortment of sticky notes, message pads, and three-by-five note cards
  • White Out (doubles as graphic and scuff touchup)
  • Pre-printed Fed-Ex labels and envelopes
  • Binder clips, paper clips, rubber bands, straight pins, safety pins
  • Cable ties (black, white and booth colors)
  • Paper towels and aerosol cleaner (wiping down booth counters, you can take partial roll or remove the cardboard center for easier packing, liquid cleaner spills)
  • Screwdriver set (both Phillips and flathead)
  • Pliers
  • Wire cutter
  • Ruler (make sure it’s sturdy so you can use as a straight edge for cutting and tearing too)
  • Measuring tape
  • Box cutter
  • Mini flash light (at some point you will have your head in a cabinet trying to figure out why it won’t close right)
  • Small level
  • Fishing line
  • Disposable camera (proving damage during shipping, fun candid photos of your staff)
  • CD/DVD of all booth graphics, handouts and brochures (know where the closest Kinkos is before you go to the show)
  • Extra copy of demo/presentation/software
  • Computer/network cables (a Cat5 cable will run you about $50 from show services)
  • Blank CDs/Jump drives

Personal Items

These are things you will want to pack and keep in the booth during the show.  They are all things we have found have saved the day for our staff over the years…we are still adding to the list all the time.

  • Quick dissolve breath strips
  • Small first aid kit
  • Wetnaps (we prefer these because they don’t take up much room and are individually packed and can be replenished from just about any seafood restaurant or bar that serves wings)
  • A fingernail clipper with file
  • A small sewing kit
  • Small lint remover
  • Stain removing pen
  • Antacid, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol (have all of them on hand, people have allergies or preferences), Eye drops–yes, people will inevitably stay up too late.
  • Hand cream
  • Tampons
  • Comb
  • Mini shoe buffer
  • Eye drops
  • Mini packs of tissues
  • Over the counter allergy medicine

Optional

Read over this list and think, “would I ever find a use for this in my booth?”  Even if the answer is, “only if a forklift backed into my booth and knocked it down” PACK IT.  If you’ve never experienced a minor emergency where you needed a staple gun or battery powered screw driver you are thinking, “this is going to cost a lot of money to ship.”  That’s nothing compared to what show services will charge for their carpenter to come over and screw or nail the corner of your booth together.

  • Grounded UL-rated surge protector strip
  • Staple gun with extra staples
  • Adhesive remover
  • Battery powered screw driver
  • Manual screwdriver (why would I need both you may ask…because in some towns the unions will cry foul if they hear that screwdriver turned on)
  • Extra light bulbs (make sure they match the ones in your booth)
  • Extra screws, nuts, bolts, etc.
  • Copy of exhibit prints (Just in case you forget which is the front and which is the back or to prove you were right)
  • Pictures of booth completely set up from all angles (makes it easy to know which graphic goes where)
  • A can of artists’ spray mount (this will become one of your best friends over the years
  • Strong shipping tape
  • Double-sided carpet tape (also makes a great hem)
  • Electrical tape
  • Shrink wrap

Office Chair Wood Floor

by richard on Nov.08, 2008, under Office Chairs

If you are anything like me, then you are bound to spill something on your office chair especially if you are using it 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. You could just leave the spill and let it stain. Unfortunately with that solution, you will constantly have to look at the stain everyday and will be reminded of that one time you spilled your cup of coffee all over your perfect looking office chair, or that time you ate butterfingers and were too lazy to wash your hands so instead you used your office chair as a napkin. Or perhaps the best solution, you could use one of my five tips I have compiled on how to effectively remove a stain from a chair for a relatively cheap price and what preventative action to take against stains.

Before trying to clean your office chair, it is important to find out what kind of material the chair is made of. Generally chairs have a manufacturers cleanability code found beneath the seat which refers to what material/s the chair is made of. If there is no cleaning instructions, a good rule of thumb to follow is the upholstery is made of at least 50% polyester. Most office chairs are made of synthetic materials (such as polyester). If your chair is made of a leather or vinyl material you will not have to worry as much about cleanliness because those materials do not stain as easily, and most of the time you are able to wipe the spill right off. It is important to prevent stains as they do not fall under manufacturer’s warranties.

Here are our five ways we get rid of stains and prevent them from happening:

  1. Foam Upholstery Cleaner: A general foam upholstery cleaner will clean, deodorize, and freshen soiled fabrics. Woolite is a great product for cleaning chairs and removing bad odors. To use a foam upholstery cleaner, first dampen the fabric with a rag, making sure not to soak the material. Spray the chair with the cleaner, and wipe gently with a clean, damp rag. Blot out the excess moisture with a dry towel and repeat the steps until the chair is clean.
  2. Home made shampoo: A little bit of a cheaper option is making your own home made shampoo alternative. Most stains should come right off if cleaned immediately. A little bit of Dawn dish detergent mixed in a small bowl of warm water, diluted about 20 parts water to 1 part soap. Instead of scrubbing up and down, it is best to apply the shampoo in a blotting, circular motion. Blot up the soap with a clean, but damp rag. Continue rinsing in this method until all the soap has been removed. Pat the area dry with a towel.
  3. To prevent stains on chairs you will be spending a lot of time sitting on it is best to choose a vinyl upholstery option instead of fabric. It may cost a little bit of money to upgrade to this option, but it will save you the hassle of having to clean a fabric office chair . If you do choose a fabric chair, apply Scotch Guard prior to sitting in the chair because it will make it much easier to clean stains when they do occur.
  4. Rug Doctor:If you have a little bit more money to spare on cleaning your office chair, it may be worthwhile to invest in a Rug Doctor which you can find at your local grocery store or Home Depot, especially if you are cleaning multiple chairs in an office setting. It will be cheaper than hiring a steam cleaning company, yet it will give you the same results. Generally Rug Doctors cost anywhere between $25-$40 to rent for 24 hours and come equipped with furniture attachments.
  5. Cleaning Solvent:Cleaning solvents work well on office chairs if you take swift action after the stain has been made. First you will need to apply the cleaning solvent directly to the stain. Use a toothbrush or scrubber to work the paste into the stain. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes. Then come back with a damp cloth towel to buff the stain out. A few good cleaning solvents are Quick and Brite as well as Resolve.

Follow these tips and your office chair will look spotless for year to come!

Sauder Home Office Furniture

by richard on Nov.08, 2008, under Home Offices

Corner desks are much more than just a desktop and a couple of drawers. If you’ve been shopping for a desk, then you’ve noticed all of the hardware that’s built into some of the desks. It is meant to make your experience more convenient and enjoyable. Computer desk hardware like CD racks, file cabinets, and sliding keyboard and mouse shelves can be a great addition to your room. You may only need some of the hardware to make your life a little easier, or you may need everything that you can get. Sometimes we automatically go for the choice that gives us the most options, but when you’re shopping for a desk, you’re going to want to find the one that gives you exactly what you want. If there are too many extra options, then you might find that they just get in your way. There is a wide range of corner desks with hardware; read the reviews below to find a desk that has the options you want.

The Tuscany Brown Corner Desk Set from Bestar Furniture gives you many options. This desk has a CD storage space that can hold 26 CDs where you can have ready access to the programs and work saved to disc that you use on a regular basis. The sliding keyboard shelf saves desktop space by hiding the keyboard under the desktop when it’s not in use. This corner desk also has an open storage area with shelves and two hutches that will let you store your work-related materials or spruce up your work area with pictures. The Tuscany Brown Corner Desk also comes with a mobile file cabinet with two utility drawers and one letter/legal file drawer. The file cabinet has wheel casters that will let you move it easily. You can store your files right by your computer for easy access, or you can put it in another part of the room if you want to save space in the corner. The set takes up quite a bit of room, though, so it may not be the desk you need in a very small office. Its dimensions are 80″ wide and 60″ deep.

If you’re looking for a corner desk that’s a bit smaller, but still offers some extra hardware, then you might want to try the Mission Cherry Budget Computer Desk by Sauder Furniture. Like the Tuscany Brown, the Mission Cherry gives you hardware like a sliding keyboard shelf and CD storage racks. The CD racks on the Mission Cherry hold fewer CDs, only 16 to the Tuscany Brown’s 26, but this might be plenty of space for your needs. The Mission Cherry corner desk gives you one piece of computer desk hardware that the Tuscany Brown doesn’t offer: an elevated platform for your monitor. Having an elevated monitor gives you more storage space and promotes good posture while you’re at the computer. The platform only holds monitors that are up to 21″, so if you have a larger monitor then this desk won’t be right for you. Because the Mission Cherry is small, it doesn’t offer much desktop space. Jotting notes on a pad of paper would be very difficult on with this desk, and there’s barely enough room to keep a phone on the desktop.

These are two options that you should explore if you’re looking for a desk that offers some additional hardware. They both have pros and cons, but not all of the cons will matter to everyone. The important thing is that you find a corner desk that has the hardware that suits your particular needs so that you’ll be able to work comfortably and efficiently.
