Office Chair for Heavy People
by richard on Jan.31, 2008, under Office Chairs

How does the tilt tension control on office chairs work?
There are some chairs at office depot that has this feature. I plan on buying one for moderate home usage. They state that you should lower the tension for lighter people and raise the tension for heavier people. But exactly how does the feature help prolong th elife of the chair. I am actually neither heavy or light in weight. And i want to prolong the life as long as possible.
Tilt tension on an office chair isn’t intended to prolong the life of the chair, its purpose is to allow the chair user to set up the correct pressure for comfortable movement when reclining and leaning forward in the chair.
Effectively, it’s just a form of spring that increases or decreases the amount of pressure to move the chair’s mechanism. The only circumstance where it might effect the chair’s life would be where someone heavy had it set it for a light user, but I can’t imagine that making that much difference.
Here’s a good rule of thumb for how long a chair may last. Take a look at the warranty being offered by the manufacturer, it’s a good barometer of their confidence in their product. You’ll find this varies from nothing (except statutory minimum) to 12 years or more, as the saying goes – you get what you pay for.

Herman Miller Office Chair Used

Office chair recommendations?
I’m looking at getting a new office chair. I’ve just gone through my 3rd ~$150 one from Staples/OfficeMax/Office Depot in as many years. I spend an awful lot of time on my computer as an IT student at home.
I was looking at the following:
Steelcase – Leap
Knoll – Life
Herman Miller – Aeron or Mirra.
Neutral Posture – Balance
I’m looking at something less than $400 and am aware the only way I’ll get any of the above are used which also isn’t a problem. The only other caveat is that it must have armrests.
If anyone has any experiences with the above, or found one they liked more, I’d love to hear your recommendations. Also, if you have a solid recommendation to a legit online store with great used prices you’re my hero.
The new Herman Miller Embody Chair is really nice. My boss has had nothing but Herman Miller chairs. It is made from recycled and recycleable parts. The fabric choices are great too. The link below is for the Herman Miller Aeron/Embody dealer that offers free shipping and a 5% off coupon. (Sorry, I have no idea wehere to get a used Aeron/Embody chair) There is also a link for America too.
Good luck!

Office Chair Wooden

Looking for the manufacturers name or even the “style” name for a living room \ den chair my parents had.?
This is not an office chair, it was a deep seating reclining chair with a separate footstool. I believe they bought it in the ’50’s in the eastern US. The chair had a wood frame with wooden arms and slats running from the arms to the base. The entire one-piece seat and back was upholstered in vinyl and lifted out of the base. The rear of the base had adjustments so you could angle the seat. The footstool top lifted off reveling a storage compartment.
Sounds like a “Morris” chair to me, too. I’m making two of them now. They date back about 100 years to the “Craftsman” or “Arts & Crafts” movement.

Office Chair Exercises
by richard on Jan.17, 2008, under Office Chairs
You might not believe this but the most important tool within your office is not the computer. The key tool at your workplace is essentially your work chair which should not only be comfortable, but also ergonomically designed to give comfort you especially when you spend long hours in a seated position throughout the work day. Ergonomic desk chairs should help you maintain spine health and prevent from developing back pains.
Ergonomic posture chairs exist with the objective to help the human body relearn the art and science of sitting. When in a seated position, you should adjust the height of your chair such that your feet are resting flat comfortably on the floor, with your thighs perpendicular to your feet. The ergonomically designed chair should provide good back and lower back support.
The seat should be height and tilt adjustable with the seat being deep and wide capable of supporting a larger sized user. The frontal and backwards tilts is adjusted on the backrest to enable the body to feel fully comfortable and well wrapped without exerting undue pressure at the various points of the back.
Ergonomic desk chairs should come with sufficient back support in the form of lumbar support pillow and also very importantly, comfortable breathable fabrics that enhances airflow whenever used. The mesh back office chair is one such example.
Some ergonomic posture chairs also have adjustable armrest to prevent you from developing carpal tunnel syndrome. The end of the chairs should be supported by a five star Castor.
There are many different designs and options you can choose from but most importantly, you will need to try and test the chairs before you purchase. The pricing is a good indication for quality spine health.

Office Chair Workouts
by richard on Jan.08, 2008, under Office Chairs
Most office-based employees spend a great deal of time at their desks in a sitting position with no physical exertion or cardiovascular strain beyond typing. When additional hours in the week are necessary for an employee to complete their necessary job functions, it can be difficult to find time for exercise. Working out in the office – at a desk – is one way to maintain physical activity while remaining stationary. Before pursuing any consistent workout routine at the office, be sure that the body is in acceptable physical shape and stretched appropriately. One quick way to stretch the body is as follows:
1.) Sit with both feet on the floor and the back in a straight, upright position.
2.) Reach arms around one side of the body to grab the chairback while keeping head as stationary as possible.
3.) Hold stretches with abdominal muscles twisting for 15-30 seconds.
4.) Return to original position and repeat stretch to opposite side
Abdominal muscles are often the victim of an under-worked office body. Core muscles surrounding the abdomen and the back can get knotted and weak without regular exertion. One exercise for these muscles while sitting in the office is as follows:
1.) While sitting up straight in an office chair, contract the lower abdominal muscles, pushing the lower back out into the lower half of the chairback. Hold this crunch for 5 to 30 seconds and repeat until fatigued. Be sure the shoulders, hips, and ears are all in vertical alignment.
Although the tasks of an office worker may be conducive to the development of muscles in the hands and fingers, there is not enough consideration made for the ongoing health of shoulders and arms. By spending a bit of time each day focused on the continuing strength of the upper body, posture will improve and soreness should decrease after multiple hours in a sitting position. One extremely efficient arm exercise for an office workout routine is as follows:
1.) Grab a book, paperweight or water bottle with one or both hands and hold it in front of the body at shoulder height.
2.) Lift arms slowly up without breaking the elbows to a completely vertical position. The biceps should be just outside each ear.
3.) Break at the elbows, bending to drop the weight behind the head and hold at a 90-degree angle for 15 seconds.
4.) Complete each motion in reverse until the weight is back to its starting position in front of the body
Posture is an optical trick that can make the body appear taller and stronger. Office chairs do not often promote the appropriate posture until adapted to the individual’s ergonomic specifications. Many work environments offer ergonomic assessments to prevent back problems among employees. If an ergonomic assessment is not available to you, remember these three points:
1.) The arms should bend at the elbow at no more than a 90-degree angle
2.) Wrists should be straight through the hands to the keyboard or desk
3.) The head should rest comfortably above the shoulders, avoiding any hunch or lean to the workstation
