Name Card
by richard on Mar.28, 2004, under The Office

The idea of Thanksgiving is to gather those nearest and dearest to you for a meal that celebrates all the good things in life. Whether your family or friends are coming from near or far, you really want them to feel welcome at your Thanksgiving table. Besides a fabulous meal and a warm setting, one of the fun ways that you can do that is to have place cards for your table. This is really a chance to exercise your creative muscle and some extra design talent (no matter what kind of table you are setting). Here are some ideas to help you make those special and fun place cards,.
If you need ideas, there are several web sites that you should check out. Most of these sites offer free printables that you simply download to your computer and then print out. You will need to have the right card stock that can be folded up into a little “tent” and be able to stand at each place setting. These can be used just as they are printed or can be embellished using markers, stickers and glitter. In addition, many of these types of place cards also have matching napkin rings that can be downloaded and used as well. This activity can serve as a Thanksgiving craft for children who need to be entertained while the turkey finishes cooking! One web site offered place cards decorated with pilgrim hats, turkeys, Indian corn and cornucopia to name just a few.
If you want to take a more original approach to making your own Thanksgiving place cards then consider the following ideas:
If your group isn’t too large and is very well known to you (close family and friends since this may be more difficult with “a friend of a friend”) then consider downloading a digital photo of each guest to decorate their Thanksgiving place setting. Whether the photo is from a childhood Thanksgiving or something more recent, this is a fun way to personalize each person’s place setting at your table and can add a fun dimension to your Thanksgiving table decorations.
For a little game time before dinner, consider making place cards with clues. This cannot be too complicated due to the size of each place card, but consider using birthdays or numbers instead of letters in names or some other personally identifying factor for each guest. Your guests will have a fun time surrounding your table and trying to figure where they will sit.
For something really different you may want to try an edible place card. This can be something that goes with the dinner (a roll or large cracker piped with each person’s name using jam or cheese spread) or a treat for after dinner (a large turkey shaped sugar cookie piped in icing with each person’s name). Since you only need place cards to determine where each person sits at the beginning of the meal, it won’t matter if they get eaten!
Many hostesses like to send home a favor for each of their guests. Your place card could be attached to a small box of chocolates or a package of hot cocoa that each guest can then take with them after the wonderful meal you have served. Make sure your favors are creatively wrapped and then attach a large tag with each person’s name to serve as the place card. Guests will appreciate your thoughtfulness and effort to really make them feel special!

Ergonomic Office Chair Aeron
by richard on Mar.23, 2004, under Office Chairs
The multidisciplinary field concerned with adapting an external environment or device to the individual is known as ergonomics. The ideas and techniques that the ergonomic discipline is comprised of benefit people by minimizing the likelihood of injury or aggravation of existing injuries and are frequently used in the design of work equipment, furniture, and even the car you drive. There are many professions that are related to ergonomic practice in both the home and work environments. The multidisciplinary nature of ergonomics allows for some overlap between the types of services offered by one ergonomic professional and the services performed by someone with a slightly different job title.
The principles of ergonomics have a wide range of application and can be put to use to improve many types of job environments. Changing the environment to fit the user, rather than the user coping with the environment, is the key principle of ergonomics. When a physician or orthopedic therapist takes the environment that an individual is interacting with into account there are two types of ergonomic principles. How would you describe your job? It is often that workers and employers alike view a particular job by its list of required tasks and the job is designed for the completion of those tasks accordingly, not for the person whose job it will be to complete those tasks.
Assessing human factors is an important part of ergonomics. The development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders can be contributed to by human factors. Cognitive, physical, personal, cultural, and psychosocial factors; communication; vocational training; work experience; health history; occupational stress; and disabilities are all examples of human factors. When a work environment does not fit with the unique characteristics of the individual, human factors may be coming into opposition with certain characteristics of the worker that may lead to additional mental stress.
If people in the workplace do not have access to an occupational health practitioner and lack knowledge concerning ergonomics, increasing levels of discomfort and the resulting stress with the continued interruption of job tasks on account of physical pain has a compounding effect on the mental state of the worker’s job satisfaction and may negatively affect home life. Ergonomic design, with its concern for fitting the unique person, aims to support the musculoskeletal system through the correct postures and ranges of motion required by a particular task while minimizing strain to the body.
The old adage that every person is unique often escapes considerable application in the workplace. Similar expressions such as, “no two people think exactly alike,” and “we all come in different shapes and sizes” do much to describe an individual’s distinctiveness and should be considered when a person is expected to interact with an environment. For example, most office furniture is designed for what can be thought of as a “universal fit,” which is an attempt by manufacturers to produce furniture that fits the “average person.” Yet, most people do not fit this type of universal design perfectly. Automobile manufacturers use the principle of universal design in car interiors, but make at least some effort to allow for variability with adjustable seats and tilting/telescoping steering wheels. Ideally, the chair in which you sit, the desk that you work on, even the keyboard you may use, should all allow for enough adjustability in order to fit your unique person as flawlessly as possible.

Office Furniture Liquidation
by richard on Mar.22, 2004, under Office Funiture

Has anyone bought furniture from a hotel liquidation store?
So i live in Chicago, and i know there are some stores here that sell furniture that 4 or 5 star hotels no longer need. One store is called Cooper’s the other Fort Pitt…i found out of these places by my mother in-law who works at hotels and says alot of the furniture is practically new.
my questions is has anyone ever bought from these places? did you like it? im thinking on getting a dresser maybe even a sofa(sleeper) for our office/guest bedroom.
anyone have any advice on this?
here’s a link to a 190North clip about these stores
http://www.190north.com/190/ExtraInfo/110605_hotel.htm
then press watch clip
I have. I got a mattress, some living room furniture, and a bunch of lamps. It is a great deal. The stuff is practically new and they sell it so cheap. I would recommend taking advantage of this opportunity and getting whatever you need.

Office Chair Tilt Control
by richard on Mar.18, 2004, under Office Chairs

Many patients who present themselves to the chiropractic office suffer from musculoskeletal disorders. More and more research confirms what we know to be true from our own daily anecdotal knowledge. There is hardly a modality that works better for these conditions than chiropractic. Yet there are a number of modalities that can enhance the benefits of adjustments.
One of these modalities is just finding it’s way into the healthcare field in America, after having been used and re-searched for the last four decades in Russia and Europe-Whole Body Vibration.
In a number of articles over the next few months, I will outline the scientific reasoning behind WBV and how it can be beneficial to the chiropractic practitioner’s practice.
I will start with a brief review of the neurologic control of posture. The definition given in Wikipedia -Posture, standing reads as follows: Although quiet standing appears to be static, modern instrumentation shows it to be a process of rocking from the ankle in the sagittal plane. Standing posture is often likened to an inverted pyramid.
Standing posture relies on dynamic rather than static balance. Our Center of Mass (COM) is in front of the ankle. A static pose would cause us to keel over on our face. In addition, we are constantly subjected to external perturbations such as breeze and internal perturbations from respiration. Erect posture requires adjustment and correction. Traditionally, our correction was explained by the spring action of our muscles. This is a local mechanism that takes place without the intervention of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Recent studies, however, show that spring action, by itself, is insufficient to prevent a forward fall. Also, human sway is too complicated for spring action to be the sole mechanism.
According to current theory, the CNS continually monitors our direction and velocity below our conscious awareness. Our vertical body axis alternates between forward and backwards tilts. Before each tilt reaches the tip-over point, the CNS counters with a signal to reverse direction. Sway also occurs in the hip and there is a slight winding and unwinding of the lower back.
An analogy would be a ball that is volleyed back and forth between two players and is not allowed to touch the ground. The muscle exertion required to maintain an aligned standing posture is crucial but minimal. A little goes a long way. Electromyography has detected slight activity in the muscles of the calves, hips and lower back.
Although the pendulum model is a good approximation, a time series of postural sway shows much more variation than is seen in a physical pendulum. In the past, the variation was attributed to random effects. A more recent interpretation is that sway has a fractal structure. A fractal pattern consists of a motif repeated at varying levels of magnification. The levels are related by a ratio called the fractal dimension. It is believed that the fractal pattern offers a range of fine and gross control tuning. Fractal dimension is altered in some motor dysfunctions.
This is one of the best definitions I have read and, therefore opted to re-use it in this context. WBV introduces a significant additional stimulus to the CNS in order to challenge the postural reflexes. Utilizing WBV on many of my patients over the last year, I have found a number of them are making significant gains in their spatial awareness and proprioceptive responses. This is particularly true for the geriatric patient and, in particular, those that have not exercised for years. Patients with chronic postural distortions also derived tremendous benefit and excelled in their improvement.
Doctors practicing with somatic release may be familiar with the term somato-motor amnesia. Many of these patients’ postural senses have become overwhelmed by the aberrant stimuli of faulty positioning. WBV helps patients to key in on their own body on a subconscious level. Integrating the stimulus of WBV into the treatment protocol increases assists the patient in becoming more aware of their position in the three dimensional room. Many experience an improved sense of balance, all of which facilitates becoming more limber and flexible.
All of these above mentioned changes are, of course, benefits of regular exercise. Moving our limbs through the three dimensional room helps to gain better control over our whole body. Yet many of our patients may not be able to go to a gym or other exercise facility for a multitude of reasons.
Having a WBV unit in the chiropractor’s office, therefore, becomes a feasible choice. Standing on a vibrating platform creates a safe and user-friendly environment to introduce a postural challenge into the above described neuromuscular control system. If the patient is assisted by a therapist and taken through a series of exercise while standing on the plate, they are performing neuromuscular re-education and the office is well justified in billing for such a service.
WBV can be a tremendous asset to the chiropractic care of our patients. It relaxes the patients, helps them to get ready for an adjustment and prepares their neurologic systems to accept the input provided by the articular manipulation. It is difficult to imagine a better preparation for the chiropractic adjustment.

Together, Chadwick and Stumpf, brainstorm to make way for a new era of ergonomic design office chair.
Ripping traditional textiles, metals and filler used in the office more traditional chair designs, Chadwick and Stumpf, addressed the latest trends in materials manufacturing and molding processes to create a new design and announced in ergonomic office chairs. Harness the idea of the easiest to use ergonomic chair of trends in the design office, Chadwick and Stumpf, turned what was once a heavy, bulky and heavy in a cabinet lighter, easier to use and friendly office tool.
What many people consider a completely utilitarian device added many additional cushions for padding, the general office chair was transformed by Chadwick Stumpf, particularly in the now called "Aeron Chair".
