Whether you are starting a new business or need a cash infusion, the idea of selling a stake will come to mind at some point. The question is whether this is a good idea or not.
One company is in many ways, the realization of a dream. Instead of working to put money in someone's pocket, you do for yourself. With luck, you are also starting a business in a field that is very interesting. As the old saying, work in a field that is not love feel like you're working. If you can accomplish this goal, the money will come sooner or later.
As with many things, running a business comes with a unique set of issues to be addressed. Sooner or later, one of the problems to be your cash flow. You may be going through a bad time and the need for funds through a slow couple of months. On a more positive development, companies can be great but still needs more money because they simply can not keep pace with manufacturing or whatever.
When a small company needs cash, the first step is to hit the local bank. Unfortunately, most banks have an attitude much tougher with businesses that make loans personal loans for such things as real estate. If your business is less than two years old, does not pay a penny. If you are older than that, might give him credit. Moreover, it may not.
For many small business owners, the idea of selling the property the company is often the apparent solution. The question, of course, is whether this is smart or not. There is no "right" answer, but some things you should consider before making a decision.
You must consider that a business is a life for the purposes of this discussion. One area of my business that frequently challenged me was pricing. It challenged my mindset as well as my ability or lack there of, to crunch numbers. I’d wonder if I charged too much or too little, will clients perceive my services worth what I’m charging or if I’ve left enough wiggle room to recoup any unanticipated expenses. After awhile, it felt more like guesswork than anything else. Pricing felt more like a big jigsaw puzzle and I was sure I never had all the pieces! Those questions compelled me to really step back and better understand how pricing works and how to price my services so I can confidently communicate them to clients and also ensure that I cover my expenses.
There are two components to pricing, the accounting or numbers side and the value side. If you’re like many, you spend most of your time focused on the numbers side and not nearly enough on the value side. But statistics show that only 15% of consumers make their buying decisions on price alone. The other 85% also look at the value they are receiving for that price. So with 85% of consumers looking at the value, we are missing out by not understanding the value of the services we offer and being able to communicate that to our clients. Value can be summed up as what we charge our clients to take them from where they are to where they want to go.
Think about your own buying habits, especially with “big ticket” items. I would venture to guess that you typically do not make your purchases based on price alone. You go a layer deeper to see what you are getting for that price and factor that into your buying decision. I can personally attest to this when we selected a moving service. We received price quotes from several companies but ended up going with the most expensive. Why? Because they did the best job of demonstrating the value of their services and made us feel confident they would address our biggest concern, getting our households goods to it’s final destination in a timely manner without damage. We were willing to pay extra for that assurance.
Our design clients are willing to do the same. Yes, there are those 15% out there that will be looking at what we have to offer based on price alone, but are these really the clients we want to be attracting to our business? NO!!!! These are clients who will forever be looking for a better price and questioning our value every step of the way. Take the time to really understand and appreciate the value of the services you offer and learn how to best communicate that to your clients with complete confidence that you’ll deliver in meeting their needs. You clients are willing to pay more for this and those are the exact clients you want to attract to your business.
Don’t shortchange yourself or your business by discounting your services when times get tough. Rather look to really marketing the value of what you provide and what you can do to increase the value of the services you offer. It’s more than just a numbers game! Next week we’ll talk more about the value side of pricing and specific steps to take to reach those clients who value your services and will pay you what you deserve.
Your Assignment: Create a “value list” using the following steps:
Think about your best clients. Write down what you did for them that they couldn’t do or didn’t want to do on their own. This clearly is where you added value. Look at testimonials you’ve received from prior clients and pick out those statements that really testify to the value you brought to the project. Think about what you do and how you can help prospective clients solve their design dilemmas. What do you do that takes them out of pain and brings them into pleasure?
Compile a list from the above steps and read this each and every day. It will not only build your confidence in what you really do as a design professional but also help you speak from the heart when discussing what you do with prospective clients. Remember, emotions drive many of our purchases and if you can connect with your clients emotionally, you’ll find price takes a back seat and closing the sale will be easier than ever.
